No True Nerd Would Miss These Upcoming 2020 Films
While the overwhelming popularity of streaming services has become a preferred activity for some, there are still a good number of moviegoers out there who enjoy watching cinematic experiences on the big screen. The usual gamut of universe-connecting comic book films, explosive action movies, and monster destruction epics still bring in the big bucks and fill move theaters across the globe.
Now that the New Year is upon us, a fresh batch of big-budget films is officially on its way. Here are 10 movies you’ll want to keep an eye out for once they finally make their way to your local movie theater in 2020.
Bad Boys for Life
If this is truly the last big-screen ride for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, then it’s only right that the whole world comes out to see them ride into the sunset. But before they hang up their police badges, they’ll engage in some drag out brawls and intense shootouts with a Romanian mob boss’ lackeys. In between all the shooting and high-speed chases, we’ll all be treated to the type of slapstick humor fans have come to know and love from two lovable 90s icons.
Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise must drink from the same Lazarus Pit that Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul sips from because the man seemingly never ages. Tom’s limitless youth is being tapped into to deliver the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick. It’s been a while since we’ve been treated to a film full of high-octane military airplane action, so we’re extra excited to see what this sequel has in store for us all. Tom Cruise is going to bring us plenty of shock and awe while going airborne – we can’t wait to see all the aviation action unfold in this one.
Fast & Furious 9
It’s pretty insane to fathom just how long The Fast & Furious franchise has been around. In 2020, diehard fans will be treated to the tenth mainline installment in the series and we’re pretty sure the stakes will be even higher this time around. Vin Diesel and his “family” will return for another round of unbelievable car crashes and outlandish stunts. But what excites us the most is the inclusion of WWE Superstar John Cena, whose role is still a mystery. Will he be friend…or foe? We can’t wait to find out.
No Time to Die
At one point, it seemed as if we’d seen the last of Daniel Craig as the iconic British spy to die for. Thankfully, he’s stepped back into the role of James Bond and is fully prepared to save the world from an international terrorist threat once again. From the looks of the latest trailer, it looks as if Bond will have to confront the truth about his loved one and contend with a new type of evil that might have him outgunned and outmanned. But this is James Bond we’re talking about here, folks – he’ll find a way to attain victory like he always does.
Godzilla vs. Kong
A match of epic proportions is going to take place in 2020. And the ring will simply be Planet Earth. It will be contested between two mega creatures that have been wreaking havoc for a very long time – Godzilla and King Kong. After two Godzilla films and one featuring Kong himself, both monsters will finally meet each other and come to blows in a big-screen showdown for the ages. We know there’s going to be a whole lot of humans involved in this film and plenty of exposition on why this super clash is taking place. But honestly, we don’t care about any of that. We’re just ready to see Godzilla and Kong pound each other into oblivion.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Recent cinematic takes on the DC Universe have certainly been very hit or miss. But things are certainly looking up for Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming slate of superhero films. Margot Robbie’s interpretation of Harley Quinn was the best part of 2016’s Suicide Squad and is reprising that awesome role for this lady team-up film. Miss Quinn will get involved in some more illegal hijinks, but this time it will be alongside Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya. This unlikely trio is coming together to retrieve Cassandra Cain from famous Batman baddie, Black Mask.
Some loved it and some definitely hated it. But 2018’s Venom ultimately resulted in a financial success for Sony Pictures. The extra scene we got at the end of that dark anti-hero film gave us a quick glimpse at Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady. Everyone knows whom his alien symbiote alter ego is – the red menace known as Carnage. Once Tom Hardy’s Venom comes face to face with Carnage, all hell will certainly break loose. Venom 2 is going to feature a special effects clash between two of Marvel’s most terrifying characters and we’re all in for the hectic ride.
Wonder Woman 1984
2017’s Wonder Woman was a revelation for the DCEU. It showed fans and non-believers alike that DC’s connected universe had the capacity to produce quality films with a strong lead hero or heroine. Wonder Woman 1984 will once again feature Gal Gadot as Diana Prince as she confronts a double whammy of DC supervillains – Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. The mystery surrounding Chris Pine’s character Steve Trevor returning after an onscreen demise in the last film intrigues us greatly, along with how Kristen Wiig’s character Barbara Ann Minerva will ultimately transform into the dangerous Cheetah.
After the emotional sacrifice of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios is looking to give her one final big-screen feature in her very own solo film. Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, super-spy Natasha Romanoff goes on the run and runs into her old comrades along the way. Red Guardian and two additional Red Room espionage trainees will join Black Widow in her fight against Taskmaster and plenty more baddies in 2020.
The MCU is going big with its next slate of movies. One of the more interesting films within that lineup is The Eternals, a space-faring adventure that will follow the exploits of an immortal alien race. Big-name actors and actresses such as Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden and Kit Harington will be on hand to play the parts of the powerful alien warriors and provide the MCU with a new team dynamic to follow. The events of this cosmic adventure will surely have a major effect on the future of the MCU and present an exciting collection of new heroes to adore.
